Winchester City
Like Chichester, Winchester is a cathedral city. Located in Hampshire at the western end of the South Down National Park, Winchester was the first capital of England (before London became the capital). The city is home to a famous cathedral and the University of Winchester. The city's walls were initially built by the Romans and were rebuilt and developed over time. Today, only a small portion of the original Roman walls remain. The novelist Jane Austin died in Winchester and is buried in the cathedral. Famous British poet John Keats visited Winchester in 1819 and wrote " To Autumn" there.
The cathedral was built in 1079 and is the longest Gothic cathedral in Europe. Winchester Castle is famous for King Arthur's Round Table, which has been hung in the castle's Great Hall since 1463. The City Museum is worth visiting and contains interesting information on Winchester's long history.
